High-flying lesson plan: Students learn about aviation through grant, Smithsonian initiative
WINCHESTER — Elementary school students are taking their learning experiences to new heights with recent visits to Winchester Regional Airport for an up close look at the world of aviation.
The goal is to open young minds to possible careers and show that STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is for everybody.
“If we don’t give them the experiences with STEM and computer science … they will not see themselves as someone who can do that,” said Amy Thomas, computer science integration coach at John Kerr Elementary School in Winchester. “So they’ll go to middle school and they won’t take the classes. And they’ll go to high school and they won’t take those electives.”
