Cold War Espionage Tour of Europe

PRESS RELEASE
CHA Educational Tours Announces
Gary Powers’ Cold War Espionage Tour of Europe
10 Days in Germany & the Czech Republic in March 2023

Philadelphia, August 22, 2022 — CHA Educational Tours is excited to announce a collaboration with GaryPowers.com on a unique educational travel venture — a Cold War Espionage Tour of Europe — planned for March 19 to 28, 2023.

As the son of the famed U-2 spy pilot shot down by the Soviets in 1960 and exchanged for a U.S.-held Soviet prisoner on Potsdam’s Glienicker Bridge two years later, Francis Gary Powers, Jr. has devoted his life to educating people about the events of the Cold War. He is a dedicated author and historian who has lectured internationally on the importance of honoring Cold War veterans, preserving Cold War history, and educating future generations about this complex period in our history. Gary founded The Cold War Museum in Virginia in 1996 and consulted with director Steven Spielberg on his 2015 film “Bridge of Spies.” Gary is an honorary board member of the International Spy Museum and has organized Spy Tours of Washington D.C. for over twenty years. A European Cold War Espionage tour, however, was something Gary had always dreamed about.

Through an email exchange with a fellow history buff who happened to be a long-time CHA tour director, Gary was introduced to CHA Educational Tours. Founded by teachers in 1969, CHA’s mission is to promote learning through travel, extending education beyond the four walls of the classroom or lecture hall. Gary approached CHA to customize a tour focusing on the Cold War in Germany and the Czech Republic. The end result is a 10-day adventure-filled educational tour highlighting Berlin, Potsdam, Leipzig, Dresden, Prague, Pilsen, Misov, Rozvadov, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, and Frankfurt.

The tour includes round-trip airfare, three- and four-star hotel accommodations, land transportation by private touring motorcoach, a full-time CHA tour director, breakfast and dinner daily, and in-depth sightseeing with entrances to over 20 fascinating Cold War related sites—from Berlin’s Checkpoint Charlie Museum to a nuclear fallout bunker in downtown Prague. The tour also features a stop at Glienicker Bridge in Potsdam (the “Bridge of Spies”) where Gary’s father made history over 60 years ago. Gary will accompany the tour, offering valuable insight and commentary along the way.
