As folks continue to bring the Richmond chapter of VAHS to life, the VAHS team is excited to have Charles M. “Bud” Southall, III join us this Tuesday December 16, 6:00 PM at the Chesterfield airport. Pizza will be provided as we hear Bud’s story and impact he has made on aviation.
Bud began flying at the age of twelve and holds commercial pilots license, CFI with instrument, single and multi-engine ratings. He has worked part time as a flight instructor/charter pilot logging 6000+ hours teaching time and performed safety work for the FAA. In 1961, Bud was accepted into the NASA Langley Apprentice School as an apprentice electrician and graduated from the NASA apprentice school in 1965. In his early years at NASA Langley Research Center, Bud supported the Apollo Project by designing systems on the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle, supported flight test operations, and programmed the computers for the Astronaut Lunar Landing training flights. He also conducted test flying for NASA in support of G.A research and simulator work for 0/0 Landings. In 1998, Bud retired from NASA as Chief of the Center’s largest Division, managing the technical operations of all Center Wind tunnels, Laboratories, Utilities, and infrastructure maintenance. In 1996, Bud was awarded the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal.
